West Columbia Avenue Master Plan
Battle Creek, MI
Senior Urban Designer leading the conceptual design for a 250-acre mixed-use development in Battle Creek, Michigan, integrating office, industrial, and residential uses with substantial landscape buffering and community-focused amenities.
The proposed development in Battle Creek, Michigan, is anchored by a 124-acre office and industrial complex. This complex features over 1.5 million square feet of building space and more than 700 parking spaces, strategically located off West Columbia Avenue to support significant business and employment growth in the region.
A key component of the development is the 13-acre multi-family residential development area serving as the gateway entrance off Helmer Road. The apartment development includes 242-units arranged around a central courtyard amenity space with community-amenities. This area includes an attractive streetscape with a boulevard entrance, prominent wayfinding, and signage that signals to visitors they have arrived in a distinctive and thoughtfully designed development.
A proposed spine road will connect Helmer Road and Stone Jug Road, providing essential access to 90 single-family residential lots. This road also facilitates community open spaces, recreational areas, and landscape preservation zones to the south, effectively buffering adjacent residential areas from the more intense development to the north. The plan aims to balance urban development with community needs, creating a vibrant, sustainable, and well-integrated mixed-use environment.
