The culmination of six weeks in Rome was a difficult urban design project located on the north end of Via Flaminia, just outside the historic center of Rome.
The site once served as the home to the Olympic Village of the 1960 Olympic Games and included the works of very prominent architects, including Renzo Piano, Luigi Nervi, and Zaha Hadid.
After multiple site visits our team decided to propose a somewhat radical solution. A highway overpass which bisected the site, severed any connectivity within the site from east to west. It was our feeling that the viaduct area could be transformed into a true destination. By ridding the site of the viaduct a new boulevard, lined with retail and other commercial uses could provide value through building frontage. The catalyst of the project was the new central Piazza della Sport along with a series of loggias and green spaces. The new blocks around the stadium are planned in a traditional Roman style, allowing pedestrian and vehicular passages at mid block, while general traffic would be alleviated by the improved connectivity of the surrounding block structure.
