DLA Outdoor Space
Battle Creek, MI

Senior Urban Planner supporting the planning and design of an outdoor recreational space for the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. Adam’s role included assisting with site analysis, concept planning, and integration of circulation, amenities, and stormwater management into a historically sensitive federal campus.

The project sought to transform an underutilized courtyard into a multi-functional wellness and recreation area, reflecting the campus’ history as a health-focused retreat while addressing modern needs for fitness and community space. The final design incorporated a multi-sport court accommodating basketball, racquet sports, volleyball, and shuffleboard; an outdoor fitness area with equipment for individual and group exercise; and passive recreation areas with benches, shaded seating, and picnic tables. Improvements were designed to respect the campus’ National Register of Historic Places designation while enhancing connectivity and accessibility for staff.

Deliverables included a series of concept plans exploring alternative layouts, a stormwater management strategy featuring underground detention and permeable surfaces, and final exhibits and cost estimates to guide implementation. The design emphasized wellness, accessibility, and historic preservation, balancing functional improvements with the site’s cultural significance.
