Single-Family Residence
Alys Beach, Florida
University of Miami
During my time studying abroad I was particularly struck by a home that I was able to visit in ruins, in Ancient Delos, Greece. Fortunately upon returning from the trip each student was assigned a lot in the DPZ development of Alys Beach located in Fort Walton, Florida, and was asked to design a courtyard residence. I was able to learn from this residence in Delos and apply it to my design project
The lot which I was assigned provided both advantages and disadvantages. Although it was one of the largest lots in area, it was also the only lot that was not completely orthogonal. I tried to solve this issue as best as I could within the plan in order to create the illusion of a perfectly rectangular building.
Another main idea in my design was the use of contrasting materials. The courtyard section elevation best demonstrates how this was achieved. On the first floor the primary material was stone and marble and to contrast the stone, wood chosen as the primary material on the second floor of the residence.
